The Hits Just Keep On Coming!
August 1st, 2009 by FrankSeems like the Chicago Blackhawks has been taking their public relations lessons from the political side of town and trying to emulate what had been known years ago as “The Daley Machine”. The NHL is now investigating the structure of the Marion Hossa deal. Apparently their was discussion about Hossa potentially retiring before the contract was up in order to ease the cap hit to the Hawks.
Other deals similar in length to this one have been signed but don’t ahve the ridiculous drop off in compensation as Hossa’s does. The NHL is trying to determine if the intent of the contract was designed to somehow circumvent the cap.
Me thinks, yes! How could it not be? Do we all really think that Hossa was going to play at 40, 41, even 42? When you look at the last couple years of the contract , he’s only getting paid $750,000 per year, and it doesn’t take a capologist to figure out what the intent might have been. Innocent until proven guilty, but I’m not liking how this looks. The NHL has vocally complained about deals like this before, and if this one was completed to get around the cap you can bet that there will be some penalties to the Hawks. I’m sure a fine of a large sum will be in order and probably a lost draft pick or two.
I really don’t like the way this looks and I hope that there is some way that this is proven to be a legitimate contract. With so much good news coming out of Chicago last season the offseason has been a pure public relations cluster—-.
Oh yea, don’t forget that if this does go down as an illegal contract, it was probably Tallon’s fault.
Thanks for reading.

Wouldn’t this of been the president’s fault? Wasn’t he negotiating it and even in the case of re-signing Havlat, it wasn’t Tallon right?

It’s hard to tell. All I read and hear is that Stan Bowman was in charge of things such as the salary cap, and that John McDonough Hawks president, kept pushing for certain players.
Rumour is Tallon didn’t like the length of Hossa’s deal and that may have contributed to his removal, slant move to Senior Advisor.
Hopefully, this goes away, and the hawks can avoid any further press bashing.

I really don’t like a lot of the moves lately…Huet…Campbell…Hossa = Wheres the room for Toews, Kane, Keith and Seabrook?

Despite Tallon’s popularity, I assume he’s the one who signed Huet and Campbell to those ridiculous contracts last year, those are going to hurt them soon. Where was Bowman “the capologist” throwing up the caution flags on that one by the way? I really thought Chicago was turning things around, but their management situation has to make you wonder how this is going to turn out, Toews, Kane, Keith and Seabrook must be signed, they will have to get real creative.

The Hawks were looking to make a big splash and did when they signed Huet and Campbell. The contracts that they were given are clearly overvalued, but showed the fans that they are not afraid to spend money. However spending like a depressed person going shopping doesn’t help your image.
As for Bowman, good question. He seems to be extremely protected and is coming out of this unscathed.
Kane, Toews and Keith must stay. They will need to figure out a way to do that.
